Eating

There are way too many great eateries here in the valley to mention even a fraction of them, but here are a few of our nearby favorites along their links to their sites, if they have them.

Breakfast

A Bit of Country
It's an informal, and very friendly, diner featuring traditional American breakfasts and lunches at great prices. They offer biscuits and gravy, grits and other comforts. It's in our end of downtown too. 418 S Indian Canyon Dr, Palm Springs (760) 325-5154

Rick's Restaurant & Bakery
Rick's is a big, hectic and wonderful place for a classic breakfast or a lunch with Cuban specialties. You can't go wrong at Rick's. 1973 N Palm Canyon, Palm Springs (760) 416-0090

Spa Resort Casino Buffet
It may cost you more before you escape than the mere $5.99 they charge for their huge buffet breakfast. What a deal it is though. It is served from 7am to 11am six days a week, and 7am to 10:30am Sundays, but get there way before 10am on Sundays because this is very popular. Not to be confused with the $17.99 Sunday brunch which starts at 11:00am. 401 East Amado Road, Palm Springs (888) 999-1995.

Cheeky's
We like Cheeky's because of their ever-changing menu. It always features something prepared in a way we have never seen before, and that's fun for breakfast. They have truly creative and innovative ideas at Cheeky's. Their smallish portions is their downside, but go anyway. 622 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs (760) 327-7595

Pinocchio In the Desert
Pinocchio's is in the heart of town and has an extensive menu of American and Mexican breakfast plates. They are open for lunch, too, offering sandwiches and burgers. A good place to sit outdoors. 134 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way , Palm Springs (760) 322-3776

Lunch

Sherman's Deli & Bakery
Sherman's is still family-owned by the Shermans and a landmark in the valley since before anybody can remember. It is a truly great Kosher restaurant, famous for its huge sandwiches of corned beef, brisket, chopped liver, pastrami, rare beef, well the list, and their menu goes on forever and you will probably be taking half of it home. Sherman's features its own fresh breads and deserts. 401 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs (760) 325-1199

Tyler's Burgers
No trip to Palm Springs is complete without lunch at Tyler's. It is outdoors and casual and features their great old-fashioned burgers and fries. It's lunch only and right in the center of town on La Plaza. Their potato salad is the best in the world, IOHO. 149 S. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs (760) 325 2990

Manhattan in the Desert
We prefer Sherman's, but if they are full Manhattan in the Desert isn't a bad backup plan. Similar huge portions of NY style deli plates. Great place to pickup a cake if you have to bring desert to an affair.  2665 E Palm Canyon, Palm Springs (760) 322-3354

Great Wall
The Great Wall is nearby and is where we get our take-out dinners when we have the urge. It's a pleasant place to eat-in also and we partake of their weekday Lunch Specials occasionally. They serve tasty Mandarin, Cantonese, Hunan and Szechuan dishes. We are partial to their Sesame Beef and Tangerine Chicken. 362 S Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs (760) 322-2209

Native Foods
A California vegan restaurant with affordable, health conscious and nutritious meals in a fun and comfortable setting. In the Smoketree center at 1775 East Palm Canyon Drive, Suite F    (760) 416-0070

Dinner

Cafe Scandia
We like to describe Cafe Scandia as European Comfort Food. It is so good and such a treasure. Lots of slow-cooked staples like beef Bourguignon , sauerbraten and lamb shanks. They have pork schnitzel, goulash, steak tartare, chicken cordon bleu and more on their chalk board, the one they bring to your table. I almost ordered frogs legs once, but didn't. 356 S. Indian Canyon, Palm Springs (760)327-2036

Dink's
Dink's Restaurant & Ultra Lounge is big and loud, and trendy, and even green. It is everything you want it to be. They bring you big drinks and a huge menu, from which everything is very good. This is the first new restaurant in Palm Springs to be built, literally from the ground up, in a very, very long time and it is a huge success. 2080 N Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs (760) 327-7676

Europa at Villa Royale Inn
This is a nearby romantic hideway that everyone loves. It has continental dining at its best in an elegant atmosphere. You walk through the charming Villa Royale Inn to get to it. 1620 South Indian Trail, Palm Springs (760) 327-2314

Thai Smile
Finding recommendable Asian food here in the desert can be problematic. Thai Smile is the exception though. We highly recommend Thai Smile and they never disappoint. They obviously endeavor to use authentic ingredients in preparing their traditional Thai food, it is beautifully presented and priced well. 651 N Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs (760) 320-5503

Roscoe Grill
Roscoe's is a cozy, friendly bar & grill built a couple years ago in the shell of a former fish & chip dive. You will find Roscoe's almost entirely inhabited by us locals, and we know best. (If you're looking for trendy, see Dink's.) The dim, leathery atmosphere is near perfect as are their steaks, seafood and salads. Here is a secret, but don't pass it on to any tourists: having a drink at the bar during happy hour (4:30 to 6:30) entitles you to order from their $5 menu which features, among other things, a 1/2 lb cheeseburger, a Chicken Caesar Salad and (best of all) their Fish Taco & cole slaw. 665 S Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs (760) 322-6500

*Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace
We have to asterisk this because it's out of town, actually it's, like, on another planet. Pioneertown was built for and extensively used as a western movie set in the 1950's. The site now seems to be inhabited by hippies and hermits, bohemians and bikers, artists and artisans, and probably even a few normal people. But everybody's welcome and if you want an experience available nowhere else, you gotta take the 35 minute drive to Pioneer Town just outside Yucca Valley. Pappy & Harriet's, the town's mane attraction is open Thursday through Monday and the best entertainment tends towards Friday and Saturday nights. Have great homemade barbecue and catch some live music. All kinds of acts come to play Pappy & Harriet's, some are even famous, so check their web site. Call in advance and they will reserve you a table. 53688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown, California (760) 365-5956
